T
he fishing is spectacular in this area of Southeast Alaska. Ketchikan, Alaska has a well earned reputation as the "salmon capital of the world!" The open Pacific Ocean, protected saltwater bays and passages, along with freshwater lakes and streams offer a remarkable variety of fish species. Five different species of salmon are available in season. The King Salmon is no doubt the most famous and is Alaska's state fish. The record sport caught king weighed over 97 lbs. A majestic fish, large and powerful, this tackle buster makes an awesome trophy along with a great meal you'll not soon forget. Silver or Coho salmon are my favorite salmon specie. The heaviest rod and reel caught silver was 26 lbs. Great fighters and the most acrobatic of the salmon family, these fish readily strike natural bait and lures. Liberal bag limits allow you to ship a box of tasty fillets home to share with friends and family. Chum, sockeye, and Pink salmon abound in our area, jamming crystal clear streams by the tens of thousands during spawning season. Giant Halibut are a favorite target of our guests with our heaviest last year weighing in at nearly 300 lbs! Keep in mind that the state record halibut is 459 lbs. Lingcod are a ferocious looking gamester as well as wonderful table fare. An unbelievably aggressive predator that will grab large fish on your line and fight all the way to the surface, refusing to let go. Many times these lingcod can be landed having never felt your hook. The record ling weighed 70 lbs. The heaviest yellow-eye rockfish caught on sport tackle tipped the scales at just over 37 lbs. Known as "red snapper" to Alaska residents, these are just one member of a huge family known as rockfish. Unmatched in flavor and beauty these brilliant orange colored fish are my favorite on the dinner plate. Steelhead or sea-run rainbow trout (the state sport record is over 42 lbs.) are available in area streams in season. These are awesome game fish with great appeal to fly fishing enthusiasts. Rainbow and Cutthroat (the rod and reel record is 8.5 lbs. for the cutthroat ) trout along with Dolly Varden Char (just under 20 lbs. the current record) are available in lakes and streams near the city.
